I just completed “Portrait of Sherlock Holmes” in time for the new Guy Ritchie film, “Sherlock Holmes,” with Robert Downey Jr. portraying the venerable detective. It is stimulating, exciting, and beautiful film to behold, and as a Sherlockian myself, I was quite impressed by the number of references to the canon Doyle books, and the quality of the characterization. While everyone raves about Jude Law portraying the most canon version of Watson on screen, Robert Downey Jr.’s performance is witty, fun, neurotic, grundgy, a little crazy, and charming.
